Breakfast at the Living Room, Macalister Mansion (Review)

Macalister Mansion is located right next to the Loh Guan Lye Specialist Hospital, along Jalan Macalister. Designed to be Penang’s lifestyle destination, this restored colonial mansion has several dining options/outlets, a bar, and eight distinctive rooms.

Encompassing all day dining and casual space to hang out, Living Room offers a delectable selection of local cuisine and international flavours. Set within a playful and colourful theme, guests can also enjoy pastries with a wide selection of beverages.

This is actually a long overdue review/post. Have visited the mansion for a few times throughout 2014, and decided to finally do a proper write-up this time. Photos were actually taken around November 2014 but my last visit was around a week ago, slightly before the Chinese New Year’s holidays.

Love how they put in mismatch furnitures pieces and they look really good as a whole.
Minimalistic design for the working countertop. White/greyish tone marble and clean sleek lines of glasses for the display cabinet.

My favourite dish in the Living Room would be the “Truffle Egg White Omelette” (RM29) – sautéed mushrooms, momotaro tomatoes and egg white scrambled served on a slice of brioche toast. Another worth mentioning dish would be the “Poached Duck Egg” (RM27). Perfectly poached duck egg with salads and balsamic reduction served on a toasted english wheat muffin is what making this dish a star too!

On my other visit, I tried the pastries samplers. They come in mini sized and were about RM3 each. A very good option if you want to try as many cakes/pastries you want in one go!

All in all, I would say that the Living Room ticks most of the point for a casual yet at the same time, sophisticated space for breakfast and brunch. The room’s colour palette, the hanging plants, the careful selection of furnitures and the cafe-vibe/ambience all add up to a near-to-perfect dining experience. Options for food is somehow quite limited, but sufficient for me I would say. Food wise, I could tell that the restaurant is trying to be creative with its ingredients, with some turned out really good but a few other options that I’ve tried during my other visits were a bit below the average level for a restaurant this standard.

I am not gonna lie but the coffee (espresso based of course) was so much better when Kishen (the barista) was still there. The coffee now is still good, but nothing to really shout about.
