The Getaway to Georgetown’s hidden gem – Muntri Grove (Review)

I was surfing on the net the other day and came across to the website of this new addition to the Penang boutique hotels’ scene. And learnt that Muntri Grove is the latest edition of “Ong Steinberg” (Christopher Ong and Karl Sternberg) collection of hotels in Penang.

I spent some time looking through the photos and description of their website and was really attracted to the idea of staying in refurbished shophouses surrounded by tropical gardens. I made a quick call to reserve a room and was attended by Sam, and the service was efficient and friendly.

Check-in was a breeze with Sam. He gave a short brief about the suite choices. The Muntri Grove has only two types of suites: the suites on the upstairs and the ones at the ground level. Both suites are the same in size, and similarly decorated/furnished. The only difference would be the suites upstairs are finished with timber flooring and the suites downstairs has marble tiles flooring finishes.

Rates for the both types of suites are the same and I ended up choosing the “Upstairs Suites”.

“A large upholstered platform day bed is perfect for an afternoon nap upon entrance.”
Just like having your own luxurious tree house with all the modern comforts of home. The upstairs suites feature beautiful, recycled wooden floors and ceilings. Shuttered, heritage windows along one side of the suite open to the treetops of the hotel's main garden.

“In between is a clean, compact, tiled shower and wc with a dressing mirror and porcelain basin on a carerra marble stand. The latest grohe fittings are used throughout.”
Soaring timber-lined ceilings with massive original beams are an architectural feature as well as generating a sense of freedom and space within. A heritage four poster bed with romantic mosquito nets occupies one end of the suite.

I then walked over to the end of the hotel for my breakfast. It was just a small alfresco concept dining hall overlooking the hotel’s pool. Options were limited but sufficient. Breakfast was included in the rate paid. Staffs were well trained, attentive and effective in catering my needs.

It was an ala-carte type of breakfast. All food and drinks were prepared upon ordering.

This would be the only place in the hotel to get food, and it only operates during breakfast hours.

After breakfast, I went for a walk around the hotel’s ground and did some more exploration and took quite some photos.

“Ten heritage shophouses in their own small private street have been sensitively conserved and adapted to create 16 glorious suites surrounded by a private tropical garden.”

All in all, I enjoyed the short stay at the Muntri Grove. The day bed was my favourite part in the suite, and a perfect spot to just lounge or taking a nap. Service wise, check in was very smooth, staffs greet you whenever you are at hotel grounds and the F&B staffs were efficient in catering to the guests’ needs. Rates for the room is very reasonable, I paid RM412 (including service charges and taxes) for one night stay and felt that my money was well spent. It felt like a getaway to a foreign place (I didn’t feel like I was in Penang at all! ) and I would for sure, return to this hotel soon.
